After having been a catering service for 4 years, Jason McDonald and Melanie Blair raised enough money (with a little help from Kickstarter) to open Max City BBQ in Eagle Rock yesterday. Serving ” slow-cooked, southern-style barbecue  [Max City] combine[s] locally harvested ingredients with traditional, crowd-pleasing recipes to produce fantastic barbecue. [Max City’s] specialities are wood-smoked ribs and mouth-watering pulled pork.”. “Fantastic barbecue” seems to be a stretch, seeing as we are in the Barbecue Desert, but who knows? Maybe the BBQ Gods will finally be kind to us Angelenos.

Early reviews are solid, and pictures of the brisket shows a very promising smoke ring. It doesn’t seem like McDonald and Blair are going for a specific type of BBQ, but they are hitting all the points–ribs, brisket, chicken, pork. The sides look like the best part of the meal, ranging from mac and cheese to collard greens.

The decor looks very…not barbecue. It looks much more hipster, which makes sense seeing as it is in Eagle Rock, but still, I’m a little disappointed.

I’m not going to lie, this joint actually looks like it has the potential to be pretty good. I’ll have to get over there to check it out and make sure it isn’t a mirage.
