About
Dispatches from the BBQ Desert began after a dream of smokey goodness from Franklin BBQ. We realized that there is nothing close to even the worst Texas BBQ in Los Angeles and wanted to raise awareness for this horrible and unfortunate problem. Each week, my friend PJ and I will go to a different BBQ joint in the BBQ desert that is Los Angeles, CA and give it a ranking. The goal is to find the best BBQ in the worst BBQ city in the world. Our scoring system is as follows: each joint gets 3 scores, ranked 1-5. The first is for the food, the second is for the atmosphere, and the third is for the pitmasters’ business smoking meat (you’d be surprised how many pitmasters have never even had real BBQ). The average of these 3 scores will become their BBQ Desert score (a perfect 5 would probably be a 2.5 anywhere else).
In meat we trust.

Hi Joe,
I lived down in Sherman Oaks for awhile, and couldn’t agree with you more, there’s nothing approaching Franklin’s within hours of LA. The best BBQ I got was what I made myself. Me and a friend recently created a prototype of a gadget that will automatically maintain the perfect temperature on a Weber for hours (our tests show about 5 degree fluctuations), and let you monitor it from your phone. I’m trying to get feedback from folks on whether or not they would buy something like this. You obviously have an expertise here, and was wondering if you can take a look at our video and let me know what you think of our prototype.

Thanks!
